|John Colton started his plating career at the young age of 16, in a large shop, plating solely mass production products. In 1987, John branched out with a business partner to start their own plating shop, which focused on production for companies that needed exercise equipment and store fixtures among other things.
Several years later John and his business partner went separate ways. At that time, John decided to pair up with another plater. This time around they added specialty work to the mix, including classic car and motorcycle parts as well as gold plating on stained glass. John Jr. also started at this time, helping plate and package parts for his dad.
As the specialty workload increased, both John and his son realized the satisfaction of turning a rusty, old bumper into a piece of art. But they also understood the downfalls of mixing production and specialty work together.
In 2006, John made his dreams come true by opening a shop that focused primarily on the restoration of classic car and motorcycle parts. JR Custom Plating takes great pride in restoring an old piece of pot metal or putting a mirror finish on dented piece of stainless trim.
